Clicker Training

Clicker Training

Clicker training is another method of animal training, used not only for dogs, but all animals from cats to parrots, from lemurs to rats, from elephants to dolphins. It is based around the psychology, in this instance, of the dog, whereby a desired behaviour is marked by a a Click, then positively reinforced, (usually by a small treat). The reason that the clicker is used rather than simply a marker word such as "yes", is because it still allows full use of your mouth as a further emphasis on the behaviour. Furthermore, it is a much cleaner mark and something that the dogs can solely associate with their behaviour being correct rather than an everyday word that they'll hear coming out of our mouths, more often than not directed to them at all. The Clicker has a distinct 'Click' to it, it marks the exact behaviour demonstrated by the dog at that specific time, which is why the timing of that 'Click' needs to be precise, something that needs a fair bit of getting used to! trust me!
